Other Ways of Using the Spanish Preposition ‘A’

Other Ways of Using the Spanish Preposition ‘A’ Although the Spanish preposition a is usually used to indicate motion toward and thus often translated as to, it also is frequently used to form phrases that can explain how something is done or to describe nouns as well as in time expressions. Using A to Mean ‘In the Style Of’ One common use of a is similar to its use in a few English phrases, such as a la carte and a la mode that come to us via French. This use indicates the way in which something is done or, less commonly, forms a phrase that functions as an adjective. Spanish phrases using a in this way usually cant be translated word for word, although it is often useful to think of a as meaning in the style of. Here are some examples of a being used in adverbial phrases (phrases that act like adverbs): Amar no es nada ms que andar a ciegas. (Love is nothing more than walking blindly.)Imgenes de televisià ³n muestran a un soldado ejecutando a quemarropa a una madre. (Television images show a soldier executing a mother at point-blank range.)La actriz se casà ³ a escondidas. (The actress was secretly married.)La votacià ³n se hizo a mano alzada. A similar construction can used to form adjectival phrases (phrases that describe nouns): Walter conocià ³ a Nadia en una cita a ciegas que le ha organizado su hermano. (Walter met Nadia on a blind date that his brother set up.)Nunca entre a una casa con un nià ±o a solas. (Never enter a house with a child alone.)Era el viaje a caballo ms largo de la historia. DAVID POOL - Research Paper Example Dave Pool’s war tactics and strategies are best revealed during the Lawrence raid in 1863. Similarly, he undertook remarkable operations in March 1865 with Arch Clement, Jim Anderson and 144 other men in Sherman, Texas. It has been identified that Dave Pool joined Quantrill in July 1862 â€Å"after his uncle, Archibald Poole, was killed and his home sacked by jayhawkers and another member of his family shot† (Captain Francis Marion Pool 1837 – 1899). There are many who hold that Dave Pool is named after the famous Revolutionary War guerrilla, Francis Marion who was also known as the Swamp Fox. The role of the Quantrill Army was no less significant in the American Civil War that they exerted tremendous influence in determining the present status of America. That is why historians regard the Knights of the Golden Circle, or Quantrills Guerrillas or Quantrills Raiders as the most prominent group that helped the confederates. The Missouri-based band was formed in December 1861 by William Clark Quantrill and originally consisted of only ten men who were determined to right the wrongs done to Missourians by Union occupational soldiers (Longley & Eby, 2010). Kansas Jayhawkers and the Red Legs who have widespread in Missouri were their prime enemies. When the Civil War broke out the Quantrill guerrillas could attract many youngsters to their army and in a way they could act as the official arm of the Confederate Army after May 1862, when the Confederate Congress approved the Partisan Ranger Act (Longley & Eby, 2010). Some of the important leaders of Quantrills Guerrillas included William C. â€Å"Bloody Bill† Anderson, David Pool, William Gregg, and George Todd. Quantrill Army was the group of Confederate guerrilla fighters during the American Civil War. William Quantrill has often been referred to as the leader of the army who exhibited audacious nature from the very young age itself.

Freak Dancing Essay Example for Free

Freak Dancing Essay Freak dancing, the newest dance craze, is now posing problems around schools all around the nation. This sexually stimulating dance is definitely sending a negative message to both children and parents. Freak dancing is completely appalling and must be banned from all school-related activities immediately. Freak dancing, also called grinding, is getting out of hand. The sexual movements and body contact in the dance is promoting inappropriate behavior. This type of dancing is occurring in schools everywhere. Freak dancing has even spread to middle schools now. That is too young of and age to be dancing in such a sexual way. School is supposed to be a safe, nurturing environment that teaches kids to be respectful of each other. How in the world is freak dancing respectful when there are boys and girls are rubbing against each other? There are even girls who go around and freak dance with multiple boys. It doesn’t only promote sex, but prostitution too. This day and age in our society is when sex is the most prevalent, even more than the time of the Baby Boomers and freak dancing isn’t helping to reduce it. Freak dancing is the most suggestive type of dancing there is and it isn’t like only Lady Gaga does it. This suggestive dancing clearly has an impact on kids’ lives. If a kid sees many people freak dancing at a school dance then they will be tempted to do it just to fit in. As more and more kids dance this way it could eventually get worse and worse. Freak dancing is almost like sex, but with clothes on. Sex is already a problem in society today. As the generations have gone by, there has been more sex in a generation than the one before it. It’s a problem because it causes desire and lust which ultimately lead to rape, sexual abuse, and abortion. Freak dancing is a prevalent problem in society today and it is a must to eliminate it from schools to reduce influence of sexual behavior in a learning environment. The less Freak dancing there is, the less of a chance kids will be tempted to behave sexually.

radiance :: essays research papers

The idea of changing perspective is a big issue in the film ‘Radiance’, directed by Rachel Perkins. This ‘art house’ film is set in Australia and is centred on 3 Aboriginal family members: Chressy, Mae and Nona, who are strangers. It deals with their efforts to come to terms with each other and with the devastating consequences of family secrets. Throughout the film fire acts as a symbol of both destruction and regeneration. The burning down of the house destroys painful memories, but at the same time regenerates the image of their mother. The technique of lighting is used in the scene where the girls burn down the house. The brightness of this scene coincides with an illumination of truth. The music used at this time of the film is very loud to give the effect of a dramatic scene. Mae plays an important part in the topic of changing perspective as she struggles with her own identity. She was the one who stayed to look after her mother, which is the reason why she reveals her pain in a moment of catharsis. Mae changes from hating men, because of how they treated her mother, to accepting them. This results in a big change in Mae’s personality: from a harsh to a softer woman. A close-up shot of Mae on the beach during her cathartic moment gives the effect of the deep emotion that lies within her. It makes the audience finally understand Mae as a strong character in ‘Radiance’. Mae is partially lit up in this scene to reflect the meaning of radiance. Nona is the driving force of the film that has a much more dramatic journey than Mae and Chressy: from a carefree, spontaneous girl to someone with great inner resolve. Chressy’s moment of catharsis has a big impact on Nona’s perspective. Nona now has to accept that there is no ‘black prince’ and that her eldest sister is actually her biological mother. The close-up on Nona’s face shows her tears and emotions, which proves that change is a continually evolving process whether it’s good or bad. The sparkling ocean reintroduces the theme of radiance when Nona is at the beach. The scattering of her mother’s ashes lets Nona gain maturity and a sense of purpose for the first time in her life. The technique of music changes throughout the movie from European to traditional Aboriginal music to the two combined.

Initial Public Offering (Ipo) Process

II. Initial Public Offering (IPO) process 1. Procedure The company which is going to issue shares to the publics holds an organizational meeting to reach an agreement in final decision of purpose, size of offering, number and type of shares authorized, also the agreements with company and principal shareholders. Generally, IPO involves one or more investment banks as â€Å"underwriters†. The role of underwriters is very important. They are intermediaries between an issuer of a security and the investing public. There are many forms of underwriting. However, in Vietnam, firm commitment contract and bought deal are popularly used. In these contracts, the underwriters guarantee for all the shares of the organization. The underwriters will buy all the number of shares or the remaining shares after the issuing period. 2. Auction In order to do the auction, the firm must determine the value of new securities, which is based on performance and potentiality assessment from sponsoring organizations, audit firms and consulting organizations to give the most suitable initial price. There are many methods to determine the initial price such as asset accumulation, market value†¦ however DCF( discounted cash flow) and P/E (price earning) are usually used in Vietnam. Both two methods have advantages and disadvantages, so the issuers usually take the average result of two methods to get the highest benefit. After defining the stock price, the company publicizes business’s operation information before the auction session at least 20 days. Investors’ voting by person attendance forms can be received directly by the firm (if the auction held at the enterprise) or intermediary financial institutions (in case of auction in intermediary financial institutions) or the Securities Trading Center / municipal securities transactions and specified agents, voting by mail conforms the auction organizer regulations. The third step is carrying out the auction and determining the results. The organization proceeds auction bills and enter these information into auction software. Then the purchase price is determined basing on the highest to lowest price until reaching the number of shares offered for sale. The number of shares investors can buy in case of equal rate but remaining fewer shares than required is calculated as the following formula: The number of shares nvestors can buy = remaining shares * (number of shares each investor subscribed/ total number of shares registered) After that, reports need to be prepared and send to related parties. The last action is announcing and charging share price. Lastly, the remained shares from the auction are sold to the investors with the agreement of price no less than average auction price (if remained shares are less than 30% of total shares offered) or o be auctioned he second time with a condition that the starting price is not less than the lowest a uction price (if remained shares are more than 30% of total shares offered).

A Civil Acton Essays - Legal Entities, W. R. Grace And Company

A Civil Acton Essays - Legal Entities, W. R. Grace And Company A Civil Acton A Civil Action The movie A Civil Action brings up an interesting idea that many people in the public don't see or hear about very often. The idea that the big corporations often don't take into account the safety of the people that work for them or the people that live around the factories. These big corporations are run entirely by money and the idea of what things will cost and how much money they can possibly make. Too many times money is more important than the lives of human beings and the people that run these places only see in dollars and cents. The moral issues that this dilemma brings up are immense. This has been happening for centuries since the industrial revolution. Workers were subjected too harsh conditions and unsafe factories so that more goods could be produced. They had children as young as seven and eight years old working 15 hour days. In our modern times, toxic waste now plays a big part in the safety of people. The waste that these companies produce and dump under our noses don't seem to bother them in the least. The way microeconomics effects this must be fully explored to realize the way the corporate world thinks and acts. The goal of any corporation is to make the maximum profit that they can providing a good or service to the community while doing it as inexpensively as possible to them. Too many times producing these goods, toxic by-products are also produced. Nuclear power plants create plutonium, factories let poisonous gasses into the atmosphere, and chemicals are dumped into the drains and washed into our water everyday while being unknown to the people around them. The issue then becomes what to do with these poisons at the cheapest cost to retain the most revenue. In A Civil Action the W.R. Grace company decided that the best place to dump the T.C.E. was in the river behind the plant. It's too bad that all the people who lived down stream were also effected by the carelessness of this company. It got into the drinking water and gave kids cancer and seizures among other health conditions. These companies try to cover up these kinds of things as much as possible by buying people off. They think that if they give people money for their losses than everything will be alright. For huge corporations dealing with billions of dollars these payoffs are only a drop in the bucket for them. Even a million dollars to any family is an incredible amount of money and often the money becomes more important than the real issues behind the problem and can't be passed up by a family struggling to get by. The benefits of paying of these people for their trouble is much cheaper then doing things the right way in the beginning and protecting their safety. Money in our society has become a sense of power and authority. People think to many times that money is the key to happiness. Although money isn't a bad thing it effects the way people act and causes them to not care about the things that they should many times. Corporations have a structure that they follow in order to make them run in an efficient manner. In the movie John Travolta initially doesn't want to take the case because he doesn't think that there will be any money in it for him and his firm. Even though he goes and sees how much pain this company has caused to the people in Wolburn, he still doesn't care because of the money. Not until he realizes how big the companies are does he take the case. As the case goes on he isn't able to achieve what he ultimately wanted to do because the Grace Company has so much money that it will almost always win. Travolta's firm goes eight million into debt trying to win this case but ultimately has to settle because they can't go on. The firm doesn't even have to clean up the polluted land that caused all the problems. It wasn't until the E.P.A. steps in and with their power was able to achieve a

New SAT in 2016 Reading Section Changes + Strategies

New SAT in 2016 Reading Section Changes + Strategies SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips As you may know, the College Board recently debuted itsnew version of the SAT. There are some pretty significant changes in the Critical Reading section, and you should make sure you're fully prepared for what’s ahead. In this article I’ll tell you what the major differences are and how you can make sure you’re using the right studying strategies to get ready for the redesigned SAT. Reading: The Major Changes in the 2016 New SAT All Questions Are Passage-Based You heard me - no more sentence completion questions!Because sentence completion questions relied on preexisting knowledge of obscure words, the SAT has decided to do away with them in favor of more on vocabulary in context questions. One of the goals of the new test is to focus on assessing the basic critical skills students will need in order to succeed in college and their careers.Knowing super advanced vocabulary words, while occasionally valuable, is not a skill that most people require to succeed in life.Understanding the nuances in meaning of more common words, however, is very useful, along with strong reading comprehension skills. That's why all the questions are now based on challenging passages that deal with subject matter that is relevant to soon-to-be college students. The Subject Matter of Passages Is Pre-Determined Much like the passages on the ACT, the passages on the new SAT come from specific subject areas rather than drawing from an unpredictable pool of different subjects. The new Reading section consists of: One passage dealing with US and World Literature Two passages dealing with History and Social Studies Two passages dealing with Science This is a move towards more transparency on the test in terms of making the material more predictable so students will know exactly what to expect.The passages also draw from more recent and real life examples to make them highly relevant to students. New "Find the Evidence" Questions There is a subcategory of questions on the new SAT Reading section that has never been included on the test before. You'll get a list of four quotes from the passage and have to choose the one that provides the best evidence for your answer to the previous question. These questions force you to double check your thought process and confirm that your answer had support in the text. In this way, they could actually help you to avoid careless mistakes. The goal of these questions is to reinforce higher-level reasoning skills that are critical for reading comprehension. There Is Data Interpretation The new SAT reading section also contains some questions that ask you to interpret data that’s incorporated into the passages.There are charts and graphs on the test for the first time. This means that you can expect to see SAT Critical Reading questions that are similar to Science questions on the ACT.Don’t worry though - you don’t have to study science facts in order to do well on the new reading section. You just need to be able to interpret data logically based on visual representations and information in the passages. There Will Be...Data Interpretation. Your Strategy: The Major Changes Don’t Focus on Vocabulary Studying vocabulary has never been as important as people make it out to be for the SAT, and now with these new changes it’s even more irrelevant.Knowing a lot of big words no longer gives you much of an advantage (if any) on the test.Yes, there are stillvocabulary in context questions, but passage reading and interpretation skills will help you a lot more than vocabulary knowledge on those. If vocabulary is a big weakness for you, and you think it could still affect your reading comprehension, you should take a look at this article on the best way to study SAT vocab. It includes a free download of 200 vocabulary flashcards containing the words that are most likely to appear on the SAT. Our article on how to answer sentence completion questions without knowing vocabulary might also be helpful. Even though there aren't any sentence completion questions on the new SAT, the skills outlined in the article in terms of using connotation and process of elimination will still be useful for you if your vocabulary knowledge is weaker. Hone Your Passage Reading Skills This one is pretty obvious. Since the new test is all passage-based, you need to have really strong reading comprehension skills.Make sure you prepare a good strategy for attacking passages before the test. Here are the two methods we recommend: #1: Skim the Passage, Then Read the Questions A good skimming strategy is to read the first and last paragraphs of the passage and the first and last sentences of each body paragraph.This gives you a good sense of the main ideas and arguments presented in the passage without having to read the entire thing through.When you move onto the questions, you can read more specifically for little picture questions that give line numbers. #2: Read the Questions First, Read the Passage Later if Necessary You can also take the opposite tactic and go straight for the questions.If you use this strategy, make sure you answer questions that give specific line numbers first.By the time you answer all the specific questions about the passage and have to move onto big picture questions, it’s likely you will have already read enough to understand the main ideas fairly well. You might be able to get away with reading the passage closely right off the bat, but you can save yourself a lot of time and stress by either skimming or skipping it initially. If a passage includes corresponding graphs or charts, that means you'll see some data interpretation questions. If you know these types of questions are easier for you, you should read the graph first and see if you can answer any of them without the information in the passage. If you struggle with data interpretation, however, you might want to wait until after you read the passage so you have more context for the information in the graph. As a subset of passage reading skills, you should also be extra careful on the new SAT with interpreting texts.There are more passages that are relevant to your life or to recent events, which means it will be more difficult for you to adopt an unbiased attitude.It’s absolutely crucial that you keep yourself focused on the concrete information presented in the passage and avoid interpreting it based on your personal feelings. Practice Scientific Reasoning As mentioned above, the new SAT Critical Reading section has questions that ask about interpreting data in charts and graphs.Some questions will also ask you to select the best evidence for your answer to a previous question.Overall, this means you need to have a strong grasp on logical and scientific reasoning skills. To practice for this aspect of the new SAT, use ACT Science practice tests.Answering ACT Science questionsrequies similar skills to answering the new data interpretation questions on the SAT. Additionally, on old-version Critical Reading practice questions, make sure you fully understand where you got your answer. If you practice being aware of where the evidence for your answer for each question comes from, the new evidence questions will be easy for you.Think of them as a way to verify that your answer to the previous question was correct. They force you to rethink your answer and confirm that it was based on strong evidence. This actually isn't much different from what you've always done on the SAT - remember that the fundamental rule is that you must learn to eliminate three out of the four answer choices, and there is only one absolutely correct choice based on concrete evidence in the passage. Wow, Evidence! Have you been working out? The Bottom Line The Major Changes to the Reading Section Are: No more Sentence Completion questions Predictable passage subjects Find the Evidence questions Data interpretation questions You Should Adapt Your Study Strategy By: Focusing less on vocabulary Honing your passage reading skills Strengthen your scientific reasoning skills The new version of the SAT reading section is different, but it shouldn’t be more difficult than the old one if you know what to expect! What's Next? Ready to get started preparing for the new SAT? Check out our article on how to study for it. Are you not sure whether you should take the new SAT or the ACT? The War on Terror Has Led To Greater Violence Essay

The War on Terror Has Led To Greater Violence - Essay Example However, all the countries the US has strategic control over, do not seem to be able to overcome insurgents and troublemakers. The underlying argument that attributes the causality of events is that the surge in violence caused by insurgents and ‘terrorists’ is a consequence of the continued interruption of the US, NATO and its allies in the affairs of foreign countries. The argument is further strengthened by the fact that the loss of civilians as a result of misdirected and poor strategic and military decisions on the part of the US and NATO has been colossal. Think of it this way, how would the American public react if a rival state such as China, invaded Texas. It then went on to establish military bases, strategic air bases, and firm control over the region. Furthermore, it carried out searches in houses of all residents on the premise of suspected terrorist activity. The reaction would be that of anger, contempt and frustration and would lead to an uprising against the foreign occupants. The situation in Iraq and Afghanistan is strikingly similar to the one presented above, except that it is happening for real with the occupation of the US and NATO forces. ... That proposition however, could turn out to be extremely challenging for the developed world amid one of the worst economic crises of history. The rationalization that leads to the establishment of insurgent groups and ‘terrorist’ organizations stems from the basic argument of right of freedom and independence. These organizations are often termed as freedom fighters or warriors by their supporters and the zeal and purpose with which they fight goes far beyond economic incentives. Furthermore the strongest insurgent groups that are participants on the other side of the War on terror, including Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, are driven by the extra zeal of religious extremism, whereby they seek to establish the principles of their version of Islam and do not tolerate anyone who does not follow their interpretations of the religious scriptures of Islam (Riedel). Their perception of death and its consequences is starkly different from a common American citizen. Through war they seek to achieve martyrdom, and through martyrdom, heaven. Their faith in their religion is far stronger than their love for this life and their purpose of existence hinges on a better afterlife (Crews and Tarzi). Terminating Fiber Optic Cable Using a Polish Method ,Testing Wired Media Both Copper and Fiber - Essay Example Company). For the termination of fiber optic, we first start the preparation for fiber termination that generally contains the procedure for gathering the supplies that we will furthermore require, cutting the Kevlar, stripping the outer jacket and buffer or coating. For supplies, we will definitely require safety glasses, connectors, a fiber disposal bin, epoxy and syringes, fiber optic cable and a polishing film.In addition, tools that are used in fiber optic termination consist of fiber notch, stripper, adjustable cable jacket stripper, Aramid fiber scissors, polishing glass plate, polishing puck plus a rubber pad to polish the PC connectors whose sole purpose is the single mode termination (CableOrganizer.com, Inc. Company). During this process we will prepare the fiber optics for termination. First we remove the cladding and the cover and then pursue the following steps: Fill the syringe by ready to use paste. Strip back the outer shield of the cable by using a rotary stripping tool. Restrain the Aramid safety component with ceramic or Kevlar scissors. Slide the twist relief boot onto the fiber to be terminated. Afterward Strip the main buffer of the fiber by using fiber strippers and be careful not to use ordinary wire strippers. Here we need to apply this on a small section at a time to avoid the fiber optic fracture, approximately 10mm (3/8 inches) on each cut will be fine until or unless we get used to it. Strip back about 30mm (1.25 inches). Then we will fix the connector. Then we need to inject the paste into the connector’s body for an expectation of a small drop that might comes out at the end of the ferrule. Clean the uncovered fiber by using fuzz free wipe as well as isopropyl alcohol, you would see that it will "squeak" when it is clean. Afterward we will apply the primer to the bare fiber either by using the brush supplied or by dropping it into the bottle. After that we will push the fiber into the
